I Need Everyone Advice.

Okay, so I want to adopt this pitbull who is about 2 years old. And my mom is all go for it but my dad not so much. Here is the thing with Mater the Pitbull.

When they first got him he was scared of everyone and everything. All he would do is stay in the back of him dog house. It took me 3 weeks just to get him to come out. Now we are best friends.

When he see's me he gets all happy and starts to wag his tail and jump up at the cage am bark. I am the only person he will do that with. If someone were to stand with me he would be happy only he would be in the back of his kennel until they left.

I have to go to the vet with him so he know that everything is okay. If I am not there he would freak out. They tried once but it took them and hour to get him in the car and another hour to get everything done. He gets so tense and stays low to the ground. But he has never tried to bite anyone or growl.

He is so good with me on and off leash the I have entered him in Flyball, Agility, and Dock Dogs. And he is fabulous. I am currently training him for his Good Citizen Test. And he is a really fast learner.

I tested him with cats, other dogs, and small animals. And he ignores all of them exept for other dogs he makes friends and they run around and play together.

He has met my 3 dogs and they get along great. I own 3 Golden Retrievers a 14,7,1 year olds. Now all i need to do is convince my dad and it has been really really hard. I am asking BSK for some advice.

Well it sounds like he is counts you as a pack member and would do anything for you. I say show your dad how much he means to you and how a little work can cure the nerviousness 'sp?'. Go for it if you can.

Also just curious do you know his breed? I know you said Pit Bull, but thats not a breed, more like a dog with a big square head. Sorry, juts curious I love the Bully breeds.

It takes a lot more than a "little work" to "cure" nervousness. It's never fully taken care of, either.

As per right now, I wouldn't see him as a fit for any child. So if you have children in the house or have children that visit frequently, my vote is absolutely not.
If you had time to get him socialized with other people, especially children, then I would take all that time that you can to do so.
Have you tested him with food or other possession aggression? Or have you taken the time to bring kids around him to see how he acts with them, even when they're not directing their actions at him?

At the current moment he wouldn't be put up for adoption by any reputable rescue, or any rescue with experience with dogs.

I do not want to start a fight, but I didnt litterally mean it would reguire little to no work. I ment that you could work with him on it.

Well, what I'd consider doing, is making a list of reasons why this dog is perfect for you, why you want it, and, then, a list of drawbacks about getting this dog.

And yeah. It does take a bit longer to get to fully know a dog before you can actually trust it. I'm sure it already likes you, but give it some time. You might decide that it's best if you didn't have the dog. I had to think hard about getting a goat, myself xD

And, do some talking with your dad about it all, see his reasons behind his thoughts.
